Formation of halogenated disinfection by-products during microfiltration and reverse osmosis treatment: Implications for water recycling

► A study of chemical removal by MF/RO monitored 34 DBPs in two water recycling plants. ► In-plant chloramination caused DBP formation that increased with residence time. ► Some DBPs detected in post-RO water were not detected in source secondary wastewater. ► RO rejection of DBPs was influenced by pKa, log Kow and DBP class.
