► Different methods are used to synthesize ferrites and mixed ferrites photocatalysts. ► Spinel ferrites have a relatively narrow band gap (∼2.0 eV). ► Degradation of contaminants by ferrites under visible light is feasible. ► Composite ferrites have enhanced degradation efficiency of contaminants.
