What are PES? A review of definitions and an extension

► The terms ecosystem services and environmental services are used interchangeably. ► Recent definitions do not distinguish between natural and man-made services. ► We define ecosystem services as services provided by nature. ► We define environmental services as services provided by humans. ► We thus propose that PES be understood as 'payments for environmental services'.
