Study of complex dynamics in pure and simple microbial competition

► We show that chaos can theoretically occur in pure and simple microbial competition. ► This is the first time such result is proven for time invariant competing systems. ► Chaos occurs when the two species grow following Contois growth and variable yield. ► We derive general conditions for the existence of periodic behavior in such systems.
