► Activation energy of Mg2Si was calculated as 376.0 kJ/mol. ► Synthesis mechanism of Mg2Si in Mg-Si powder mixture was “diffusion”. ► At 853 K, Mg and Si reacted completely, and no obvious oxidation was detected. ► SPS was one of the advanced methods for the synthesis of Mg2Si.
