AbstractHigh speed machining implies both high production and product quality, where surface roughness is an important performance index. A proposal for a supervisory control system is presented that predict the cutting parameters in peripheral milling process based on monitoring the surface roughness and the cutting tool condition. The novel framework consists of four modules: data acquisition system, cutting tool monitoring, surface roughness prediction and intelligent planning. Given its relevance, the surface roughness prediction module is presented in detail. A general model is introduced that considers several aluminum alloys, cutting parameters, geometries, and cutting tools. Early results validate the potential benefits of the cost-effective supervisory control system.
