Renovating for a large-scale image smudge is seldom considered in classical archive preservation. This is mainly due to the fact that we simply have little reference information for repairing the target area; thus, it is hard to obtain satisfactory renovating performance. To conquer this problem, we apply advanced SSD calculation and edge confidence to design an exemplar-based repairing mechanism. The adoption of advanced SSD is expedient in looking for a close reference patch, while edge confidence is useful for avoiding error diffusion. Specifically, a semi-fragile watermark is embedded into the target area during the renovation process, a tool that can be used to preserve the copyright of the improver during the Internet transmission. Experimental results have demonstrated that these reformations can help in renovating a large-scale smudge in digital image archives and can provide copyright protection in delivering the repaired image over the Internet.
