Synaesthesia in a logographic language: The colouring of Chinese characters and Pinyin/Bopomo spellings

►We present the first verified sample of Chinese-language synaesthetes. ► We present the first evidence of synaesthesia in a logographic language. ► We show that synaesthetic associations in Chinese are not random, both for first- and second-language Chinese speakers. ► Synaesthetes may colour characters using mechanisms based on the initial letter/vowel of the associated Pinyin/Bopomo spelling. ► Character-colouring is not determined by character tone.
