• The contribution of machining parameters to cutting force components is quantified.
• Statistical approach was used for selecting the important variables of the models.
• The normal cutting force for CFRP has amplitude higher than the feed cutting force.
• The presence of robot configuration in the feed force model is deemed necessary.
• The presence of robot configuration in the normal force model is not significant.

In this study, the combined effects of machining parameters on cutting force components during high speed robotic trimming of CFRPs were experimentally investigated. A statistical technique based on the evaluation of the rank and the condition number of the observation matrix followed by the backward elimination approach was used for selecting the most important variables of the models. The developed models were then used to predict the cutting force components for different values of cutting speed, feed and robot configuration. Outcomes from the models were analyzed and compared. A very good agreement with experimental data was achieved. Furthermore, results show that the amplitude for the normal force is higher than that for the feed force. The feed rate exhibits greater influence on cutting force components as compared to the cutting speed and robot configuration. The two-level interaction effect of the feed, cutting speed and robot configuration are also found significant.
