International benchmarking: Supplying the information for product efficiency policy makers

► We present a method to compare energy efficiency of appliances across countries. ► Cold appliances, washing machines and driers show improvement in energy efficiency. ► Part of this is due to increased capacity and not to lower energy consumption. ► Either minimum standards or energy labels result in increasing efficiencies. ► Policies should be based on product energy consumption and not only on efficiency.
