• A new and simple fluorescent chemodosimeter for resumable detection of Hg2+ has been developed.
• The chemodosimeter highly sensitive and selective responds to Hg2+ with remarkably enhanced fluorescence intensity in aqueous solution.
• The chemodosimeter can remove Hg2+ and could be reversed back by the addition of NaBH4.
• The chemodosimeter can detect Hg2+ in drinking water by both one- and two-photon excited fluorescence with low detection limits (<2 ppb).
A new and simple fluorescent chemodosimeter, 7-allyl-2-methylquinolin-8-ol, has been synthesized for resumable detection of Hg2+. The chemodosimeter displays a highly sensitive and selective response to Hg2+ with remarkably fluorescence intensity enhanced in aqueous solution containing 0.2% organic cosolvent. Moreover, this resumable chemodosimeter can remove Hg2+ from water by forming a mercury- containing compound, which could be restored to chemodosimeter 1 by the addition of NaBH4. Furthermore, the chemodosimeter has been successfully applied for Hg2+ detection in drinking water by both one- and two-photon excited fluorescence with low detection limits (<2 ppb).
