Adaptation of fisheries and mariculture management to extreme oceanic environmental changes and climate variability in Taiwan

► This study analyses long-term data sets of environmental factors and biological observations. ► Extensive period of strong wind in La Niña causes extreme cold water intrusions in the Taiwan Strait. ► Occurrence of extreme cold water events greatly damages coastal fisheries and cage aquaculture. ► Suspension of fishing activities instead of juvenile release can help to recover marine ecosystem. ► A warning system and switch farming area assist fish farmers in adapting to climate variability.
