Conservation values in marine ecosystem-based management

► Marine ecosystem-based management involves trade-offs between competing uses. ► Little precedent for using conservation values in ex ante analysis and planning. ► We use conservation values for the western Steller Sea Lion to highlight potential issues. ► We find that the benefits of conservation may exceed value of the related fisheries. ► We conclude that guidance on how to integrate conservation into planning is needed.
