Spectroscopic, morphological and chemical characterization of historic pigments based on carbon. Paths for the identification of an artistic pigment

► Reference carbon-based pigments were characterized by FTIR-ATR and SEM-EDS. ► Pigments from different sources were discriminated. ► The methodological approach was applied to the identification of black pigments in two colonial paintings. ► Charcoal and ivory black were identified.
