Genetic similarity based on isoenzyme banding pattern among fifty species of Medicago representing eight sections (Fabaceae)

► No marked difference in banding patterns observed among five subspecies of M. sativa. ► All five subspecies of M. sativa showed close affinity with M. shepardii. ► High level of incompatibility assessed among Medicago species. ► Most clusters embodied species of more than two sections. ► Utility of isoenzyme based clustering in plant systematics and breeding is discussed.
