Sol gel synthesis and spark plasma sintering of lanthana-doped alumina glass

► Eutectic compositions of alumina-lanthana (AL) oxides were made by sol-gel method. ► The amorphous oxides were flame-sprayed, forming glassy largely transparent beads. ► Beads were consolidated by the Spark Plasma Sintering method at various T and P. ► Dense AL glasses were obtained with about 40% transmittance in the visible range. ► AL samples had up to about 70% transmittance in the IR range.
