Synthesis, crystal structure, and thermoelectric properties of the YbAl3-ScAl3 solid solution

► We have synthesized solid solutions of the form Yb1−xScxAl3 for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. ► Solid solutions show an increase in the thermoelectric power factor. ► Lattice thermal conductivity is decreased strongly upon alloying. ► Thermoelectric figure of merit of alloys is increased by 30% over pure YbAl3.
