A new cluster-based cubic phase in the Al-Cu-Ir system

► The structure of Al62Cu13Ir25 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. ► It is a superstructure of a 1/0-approximant of a Mackay-type quasicrystal. ► The cluster-based structure is composed of polyhedra of mainly icosahedral symmetry. ► A high amount of disorder was observed in the inner cluster shells.
