Diffusion mechanism of Zr-based metallic glass during oxidation under dry air

► A three-stage oxidation behaviour for BMG is observed. ► A transition of diffusion mechanism during oxidation of BMG is proposed. ► The mechanism relies on stabilization and crystallization of amorphous matrix of BMG. ► The oxidation of the pre-annealed alloy is governed by inward lattice diffusion of oxygen.
