► We produced nanocrystalline/amorphous Al-based matrix composites reinforced with B. ► The hardness of nanocrystalline matrix composites is in the range of 9.46-9.83 GPa. ► The hardness of amorphous matrix composites is in the range of 8.43-8.65 GPa. ► The specific yield strength of nanocrystalline matrix composites is 745-830 kN m/kg. ► The specific yield strength of amorphous matrix composites is 689-737 kN m/kg.
