In this paper engineering drawing techniques are examined with a particular focus on the use of the modulus concept in design. Modulus concept here means a unit of measure based on experience and relation to key attributes from which all the design corresponds. This approach appears to be more familiar in architecture; however, less so in mechanical engineering. To illustrate this a historical review of the modulus concept is given and its applicability for today's mechanical engineering practise is shown.
► The modulus concept relates an artefact's proportions to a key functional dimension.
► Its evolution in engineering and relation to harmonious design are evidenced.
► Classes are used to overcome a nonlinear relation for its ratio.
► Its applicability to today's mechanical engineering practise and education is shown.
