Plastic deformation behaviors of Ti-Al laminated composite fabricated by vacuum hot-pressing

The tensile, flexural and compressive properties of the Ti-Al laminated composite were investigated respectively to explore the deformation behaviors in microcosm. The SEM observation on the tensile fracture morphology showed that delamination initiated at the interface and no cracks went through Ti and Al layers. During bending process, micro cracks appeared when the bending angle reached 120°. While the sample did not break even when it was bent to 180°. Furthermore, the physical model analysis indicated that the tension stress at the interface was the key factor to cause fracture. However, flexural experiment results exhibited that the delaminations and shear band at the interface were caused by normal and shear stress. It was found that compressive specimens tested in perpendicular direction failed owing to a 45° slant crack across the thickness direction, while those tested in parallel direction failed due to the interaction of local buckling and extension of the delaminated zone.
