Ti6Al4V was chosen as the substrate material, and two modified layers were made by the N+ implantation process and Unbalanced Magnetron Sputtering (UMS) TiN method. The characterization and impact wear behaviors of two modified specimens were studied with XRD, SEM, step profiler etc. It is found that the fatigue wear is the common failure mode of two specimens under repeated impact condition, but the failure mechanism of the N+ implantation specimens is mainly pitting and fatigue flake, and that of UMS TiN is mostly delaminating failures associated with abrasive wear. The test indicates that the impact wear performance of the specimens are determined by multiple factors such as surface hardness, film-base bonding strength, film roughness.
