Selective sterilisation of undisturbed soil cores by gamma irradiation: Effects on free-living nematodes, microbial community and nitrogen dynamics

► We applied a range of gamma irradiation doses to intact soil cores. ► Free-living nematodes were eliminated by a 5 kGy dose. ► Nitrification was inhibited beyond 10 kGy, ammonium release was complex. ► Microbial biomass C decreased beyond 10 kGy and was below detection at 40 kGy. ► Phospholipid fatty acids unexpectedly persisted even in sterile soil.
