Mechanism for the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation by juliprosopine on rat brain mitochondria

► Algaroba causes neurotoxicity in animals. ► We study the effects of juliprosopine, an alkaloid present in algaroba, on the bioenergetics of brain mitochondria. ► Juliprosopine caused inhibition of the mitochondrial ATP synthesis. ► Juliprosopine acts as an uncoupler by the modification of the arrangement of the inner mitochondrial membrane. ► Impairment of mitochondrial bioenergetics could be involved in algaroba toxicity.
