Neutralization of Bothrops alternatus regional venom pools and individual venoms by antivenom: A systematic comparison

► We studied functional B. alternatus venom variation at different geographical scales. ► We found that pooled venom toxicity is hardly representative of constituents. ► The same happens with neutralization by antivenom. ► The extent of variation seems to be independent of geographic scale. ► There are implications for interpretation of preclinical tests of antivenoms.
