Aquaporin-1 in cardiac endothelial cells is downregulated in ischemia, hypoxia and cardioplegia

► Expression, regulation and function of cardiac aquaporins (AQPs) is controversial. ► We show AQP1 in cardiac endothelial cells, in basal and apical membranes. ► AQP1 is also found in endothelial cell caveolae near the apical membrane. ► Expression of AQP1 is reduced in ischemia, hypoxia and cardioplegia. ► AQP1 can possibly be downregulated by means of microRNA-214.
