A Parallel Overlapping Curvilinear AMR Grids Management Tool based on PARAMESH

Body-fitted curvilinear coordinates are widely used in computational fluid dynamics. In case of covering complex geometry, several such grids may be used together with small overlapping region. We present a parallel grids management tool for overlapping curvilinear grids equipped with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) capability. By adding fine grid patches or blocks in regions of the flow where more resolution is needed, such as near shocks and detonations, AMR can dramatically speed up a computation and/or enable simulations with a much higher effective resolution compared to uniform structured grids. The software is developed base on PARAMESH, a parallel AMR library which supports a single piece of logic space for curvilinear coordinates. We enhanced PARAMESH to support multi logic spaces representing overlapping AMR grids. The main contributions of this work are the dynamic load balancing and neighbor finding algorithms. Several test cases and an application in Magnetohydrodynamics are provided. The results show promising scalability and mesh efficiency.
