Direct Torque Control (DTC) for induction motors using the matrix converter is a high-performance motor control scheme with fast torque and flux responses. However, the major problem with DTC drives is the high-torque ripple. This paper investigates the improved DTC method for matrix converter drives based on hybrid particle swarm optimization to reduce the inherent torque ripple that appears in conventional DTC. The main advantages of the matrix converter are combines with those of the DTC technique, generating the required voltage vectors under 0.9 input power factor operations. A comparison between the classical DTC using matrix converters and the proposed method is carried out, and the experimental results are shown to illustrate the feasibility of the strategy.
