Alterations in macrophage phenotypes in experimental venous thrombosis

In humans, the longer time that the thrombus is in contact with the vein wall, the greater the damage. Therefore, treatment strategies designed to minimize thrombus burden at early time points are imperative. Direct modulation of inflammation has not been explored in venous thrombus, and we speculate that altering the M1/M2 balance may accelerate thrombus resolution and allow the development of translatable novel therapies to treat venous thrombus. These new therapies may allow the thrombus to be more lysable, which may represent an alternative treatment avenue for reduction of post-thrombotic syndrome and avoidance of complications related to standard therapies.
