The trend to use «free» diets, which for instance exclude gluten, dairy and meat products in healthy populations, is far away from being evidence-based and is even in contradiction to all the principles of a balanced nutrition. Food exclusion should be supervised by health care professionals and scarcely limited to medical purposes. The lactose intolerance due to a progressive deficiency in lactase activity allows nevertheless the intakes of moderate but significant amounts of dairy products. The gluten-free diets used in celiac diseases, or in the novel entity referred to as gluten hypersensitivity, must be reserved to the medical domain and never be subject to self-prescription. Due to their harmful impacts on health, social behaviors, and quality of life, «free» diets must be firmly baned when their prescriptions do not result from skilled professional advices.
