Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the head and neck are not homogeneous as previously thought. A shift in the epidemiology of head and neck cancer has been consistently reported during the last 20 years, especially affecting oropharyngeal cancer. We now know that HPV-related oropharyngeal carcinomas are a unique subtype of head and neck carcinomas, demonstrating that HPV-related squamous cell carcinoma is a different entity from the classic alcohol and tobacco induced SCC with a distinct clinical and prognostic profile.
