Feeling capable of remaining in the same job until retirement?

At the age of 52, 6% men and 14% women considered it impossible to stay on their current job until they retired. Arduousness of present or past work and health deficiencies decrease the likelihood of feeling capable of retaining one's job. But the results highlight the role played by variables regarding meaningfulness of work. Five years later, respondents who had claimed in 1996 not to feel capable are much more likely to find themselves unemployed or off their job for injury or disease and more likely to be on early retirement or retired (than to still be employed).
