Awareness of age-related macular degeneration-using cross-national surveys to measure changes over time

AMD is the main cause of blindness in the over 50 population, yet awareness of the disease is low. This paper looks at the use of surveys to measure changes in awareness of AMD over time and in comparison with other eye diseases. Recent surveys indicate an awareness level ranging from 6% (Japan) to 46% in the United States with most countries around 15%. Awareness levels are also low in comparison with other conditions (around 90% for glaucoma and cataracts).
