More than 40% of women take medication during the first trimester of pregnancy. One of the principal goals of preconception care is the primary prevention of drug-induced teratogenic exposure. This is defined as one that may produce a permanent abnormality of structure or function in an organism exposed during embryonic or foetal life. Paternal risk factors should be evaluated as well.
