Interruption volontaire de grossesse

Abortion concerns nearly 200,000 women in France each year. It is performed using one of the two following protocols: up to seven weeks amenorrhea, abortion can be obtained pharmacologically (administration of mifepristone followed by misoprostol; since 2001 these drugs can be administered on an outpatient basis); between seven weeks and fourteen weeks amenorrhea, abortion must be performed in a hospital, with general or local anaesthesia, by suction, after cervical dilatation by mifepristone or misoprostol. Developing the outpatient management of pharmacological abortion and local anaesthesia for surgical abortion appears necessary; in addition, a psychological management of the concerned woman is necessary to understand her reasons of choosing abortion, and to begin more effective subsequent contraception.
