Wound dressings

Surgeons are involved in the management of wounds on a daily basis. Just as an understanding of the physiology of wound healing is fundamental knowledge for the surgeon-in-training, so is an understanding of the properties, uses and limitations of the various wound dressings available to facilitate the healing process. The rational use of dressings for wounds healing by secondary intention is discussed. A practical guide to dressing selection incorporating assessment of patient-, wound- and dressing-related factors is discussed, and the key properties of the major groups of wound dressings in common use outlined.
