Organisms of importance to the general surgeon

Despite advances in surgical technique, antimicrobial therapies and infection control strategies, the surgeon must contend with infectious agents perioperatively. Understanding the distribution and diversity of micro-organisms (and their potential for evolution) provides an informed basis for the implementation of effective measures to limit their spread. Updating of knowledge is necessary because new strains continue to emerge. Also, liaising with local microbiologists promotes better practice. This review discusses the role of micro-organisms in perioperative infections.
