Imaging and investigation of the gastrointestinal tract

Imaging and investigation of the gastrointestinal tract is undergoing major changes. Luminal imaging is still the preserve of barium studies; new techniques are available from cross-sectional imaging for the large bowel. Extraluminal gastrointestinal disease is best assessed with cross-sectional imaging. Radiology can complement other methods (e.g. endoscopy) and can confirm the suspected diagnosis. Often, more than one investigation is required and tests may need to be done sequentially.
