Effects of pain relief on the fetus and newborn

Although natural labour is normally painful, such pain has little value and is potentially harmful to the fetus. Effective analgesia in labour is therefore of potential benefit to the baby. This contribution covers systemic opioid analgesia, regional analgesia and its direct and indirect effects on the fetus, and maternal general and regional anaesthesia.
