Cherenkov counters in heavy-ion physics

Recent developments in Cherenkov devices for the identification of electrons and high-momentum charged particles in heavy-ion physics are reviewed. The emphasis is on the peculiar features dictated by the high multiplicity environment characteristic of central nuclear collisions.
