Light and scanning electron microscopic study of the tongue in the white tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla, Accipitridae, Aves)

In the white tailed eagles the anterior and posterior lingual glands were distinguished. The glands consist of several alveolar-tubular secretory units and a subepithelial chamber collecting the mucous secretion. The orifices of the anterior glands are situated on the lateral surfaces of the posterior part of the lingual body, whereas the posterior lingual glands open on the entire surface of the lingual root.
