Negligible particle-specific toxicity mechanism of silver nanoparticles: The role of Ag+ ion release in the cytosol

The observed toxicity in AgNP-treated cells was found to be mainly caused by a heavy metals type mechanism following nanoparticle degradation in the acidic compartments of the cells (lysosomes) and the subsequent extrusion of Ag+ ions in the cytosol.90
