AC5 Surgical Hemostat™ as an effective hemostatic agent in an anticoagulated rat liver punch biopsy model

Two separate groups of rats were tested; one group was dosed with heparin (400 IU/kg) and the second was not administered heparin. A 4 mm liver core was removed via a punch biopsy to simulate a noncompressible wound. The hole was treated with either one of two reconstituted forms of AC5TM, saline or nothing. Time to hemostasis (TTH) was prompt and comparable among animals within each group administered AC5TM, regardless of anticoagulant status. AC5TM-H achieved hemostasis more rapidly than AC5TM-L. Anticoagulation status was determined by APTT and ACT testing. The heparinized animals without treatment continued to bleed for 25 min.206
