► Foreperiod and sequential effects usually occur in temporal preparation tasks. ► We manipulated inter-trial interval and task context to understand their nature. ► The foreperiod effect modulation by ITI depended on task context. ► Sequential effects were instead reduced by longer ITIs independently of task. ► This dissociation reveals that multiple processes underlie temporal preparation.
