In a non-industrial Papuan society: ► Schooling was associated with hand preference, but not with asymmetry of hand skill, indicating developmental plasticity. ► Hand skill asymmetry was not a major determinant of hand preference. ► We found evidence of implicit selection of the fitter part of the population to enter school.
