► Processing nonsense speech is indexed by the Phonological Mapping Negativity (PMN). ► PMN is independent of phonologic relatedness between the target and expected sound. ► PMN is larger over frontal-central regions and is symmetrical over the hemispheres. ► Response accuracy is greater the more the target sound violates the expected one. ► Reaction time is faster the more the target sound violates the expected one.
