► We examined neural activity during the preparation for voluntary action. ► We manipulated attention to the timing of movement initiation. ► Attention to action timing enhanced pre-movement activity at right frontal regions. ► Relatively unattended movements had little early pre-movement activity. ► Attention to time is important for early neural activity of the readiness potential.
