Role and activation time course of phonological and orthographic information during phoneme judgments

► We examined the interaction between phonology and orthography during phoneme judgments. ► ERPs data showed that phonology played a role at the pre-lexical processing stage. ► The orthographic effect was found later on during lexical and post-lexical processing. ► A different activation pattern was previously found in speech recognition tasks.
