Differential visual processing for equivalent retinal information from near versus far space

► Healthy human observers performed visual perception tasks at near (peripersonal) and far (extrapersonal) viewing distances. ► Visual stimuli in near and far viewing conditions were matched for visual angle and luminance. ► Visual identification tasks showed similar patterns of performance for near versus far viewing conditions. ► Visual detection tasks showed different performance for near versus far viewing, despite equivalent retinal information. ► Data support to the view that near and far visual spaces are differentially processed by dorsal and ventral visual streams.
